What Is This Thing Called Internet Marketing Consulting?

by NancyC on May 1, 2009

When I say I’m an Internet Marketer, or an Internet Marketing Consultant, I swear people’s eyes actually glaze over.

They get a look on their face that reminds me of a good old Sci Fi Flick when people get infected by Alien spores.

I think the basic reason for this is simple – after all these years, most business people still don’t really understand what the internet is.

Here’s a real basic picture of it for you.

First, let’s start with Marketing.

Everyone seems to understand that term.

Basically, marketing involves putting your business, product or service in front of potential customers by purchasing advertising in publications or media that your potential customer reads or watches.

This could be trade journals, television, newspapers, etc.

Everyone gets that, right?

Now, certainly, that’s not all that’s involved in marketing – but remember, we’re keeping it simple.

Now why is it people get confused when we put Internet in front of Marketing?

For the simple reason they don’t yet understand what the internet truly is.

The internet is nothing more than a communication tool.

The biggest and greatest communication tool ever devised, but still just another communication tool.

It’s what is inside this tool that makes it exciting.

Think of the internet as a global television with thousands of channels.

What might those channels be? Well, let’s break down a partial list.

  1. Websites
  2. Blogs
  3. SEO (Search Engine Optimization – want to own Google?)
  4. Web 2.0 Properties
  5. Social Media Marketing
  6. Video Marketing
  7. Podcasting
  8. RSS Marketing
  9. Article Marketing
  10. SEO Marketing
  11. Widgets
  12. Software Directories
  13. Power Point Directories
  14. PDF Directories
  15. Forums

So the whole point of Internet Marketing is turning your content into different media to reach as many of these people as possible through the different “channels” available.

Just as everyone doesn’t watch the same television station, neither do all people choose to receive their information from the internet in the same way – that’s why you need to repurpose your content to gain maximum exposure across all the different “channels” that exist on the internet.

There are two benefits to doing this.

First and foremost, it gains you multiple listings in the search engines.

Secondly, you are making your visitor a happy visitor by giving them your content in the format they choose to read, see or listen.

Your business at this point in history actually has the power to have your own “television” channel by using video, your own talk show by using a tool like blog talk radio, your own podcast on ITunes, and that is barely scratching the surface.

You have the ability to become a media giant by using the capabilities of the internet to deliver your message across a broad spectrum of channels effectively and inexpensively when compared to any other marketing you might be doing.

The advantages to shifting your marketing and advertising dollars online are threefold.

First, it’s where the people are – statistics show that 80% of people are now searching locally for goods and services.

That’s right, newspapers and yellow pages are dead – they just aren’t effective any longer. 80% of your potential audience doesn’t USE them anymore, yet most businesses are still throwing 80% of their marketing and advertising dollars at these same old traditional forms of marketing.

Let me ask you, does it make sense to be spending 80% of your budget on marketing that only reaches 20% of your potential audience?

Another advantage is that the internet is trackable and quantifiable. You know if your advertising dollars and marketing money is being wisely used because you can visibly see how many visitors are coming to your website.

That certainly isn’t something you can do with the old traditional advertising methods is it?

And finally, internet marketing allows you to build relationships with your prospect base. It’s a pretty well known statistic that your prospect has to hear from you about 7 times before they trust you enough to become your customer.

By utilizing direct response marketing, you can build that relationship with your prospects on autopilot, educating them about you, your business, your products and services – relationship building.

Internet Marketing is the most effective way to bring new clients in your door if you learn to use it as the tool it really is and take advantage of its enormous capabilities.

To Your Online Success!

Excellent article and communicated perfectly for the layman, which is what we internet marketing consultants do on a daily basis for our clients. I love the moment the lightbulb goes on and the client finally connects the dots. They suddenly understand why their website hasn’t been working. The only moment better is when the client realizes the fruits of my labor and has increased ROI for their marketing dollar. Great post!

Hi Darren,,,,,thanks….yes, once people understand and the light bulb goes on you can see it in their eyes…particularly when you can point out to them how much traffic they are missing, and the value of that traffic to their bottom line.
